About the Instructor

Ben Farney is a professional full time arborist whose passion for his profession and love of sharing it, is obvious the moment you meet him. He received his climbing certification in 2010 and has been climbing and working in trees ever since. Ben has worked for Vermont Electric Power Company on transmission lines in the winter months and spent his summers doing residential tree work for more than 10 years. His journey has included topping out large white pines on the powerlines, slinging large picks over houses with a Hundred ton crane, to even enjoying the quiet serenity of pruning an orchard.

PRACTICAL RIGGING AND TREE WORK FOR ARBORISTS

Students learn the proper way to assess a tree for removal on MRs System using the hitch climber system and Zig Zag in conjunction with hand and foot ascenders. They will learn to combine this system with Spurs and demonstrate the proper use of climbing gaffs and a flip line. They will learn the proper selection and use of equipment and ropes used in daily work, and proper application of the climbing knots learned as a prerequisite. Additionally, they will learn basic limb removal techniques including natural crotch rigging and the use of multiple slings with a speed line system. This system will be attached to the tree with a running bowline. Students will also be instructed on how to set up mechanical advantage with ropes, pulleys and the Maasdam Rope Puller. Two different versions of the m-rig technique will also be part of the course to teach how to work around dead trees safely. How to estimate and price their work and time. This class involves “classroom” discussion, actual rigging, climbing with gaffs and hands on teamwork. Class size is limited to 4 student max., and the materials used are in accordance with ISA published books and documentation. Equipment the student needs to bring for this class: helmet with strap, gloves, climbing rope, climbing harness, gaffs/spikes and rugged work boots with a good heel for climbing with gaffs and that are preferably steel toed.

Cost: $475 total ($100 deposit at reservation and $375.00 at start of class).

COMPLEX RIGGING AND TREE WORK FOR ABORISTS

This is a follow on course for Practical Rigging and Tree Work for Arborists which is the prerequisite. Students will be instructed in the fish pole technique, rigging heavy wood, major variables in blocking down sections of trunk wood, negative rigging, natural crotch rigging, tip tying, butt hitching, Portawrap, Massdam Rope Puller, how to tie blocks, how to rig with crane slings and safe operation of a speed line.

Equipment the student needs to bring for this class: helmet with strap, gloves, climbing rope, and climbing harness.

Cost: $475 total ($100 deposit at reservation and $375.00 at start of class).

They will learn and demonstrate the proper use of climbing with gaffs /spikes and a flip line, the proper selection and use of equipment and ropes used in daily work, proper application of the climbing knots learned as a prerequisite.

Prerequisite: Students must be experienced at climbing and moving around in trees or have completed NETC tree climbing course. Additionally they must be able to tie the following Knots Cow Hitch, Zeppelin bend, Sheet bend, Clove hitch, Alpine Butterfly, Running Bowline, Overhand Knot, Half hitch, Directional slip knot, Cats paw and basic Prusik knot. We recommend the ISA book “Arborists’ Knots for Climbing and Rigging”.

Equipment the student needs to bring for this class: helmet with strap, gloves, climbing rope, climbing harness, gaffs/spikes and rugged work boots with a good heel for climbing with gaffs and that are preferably steel toed.
